Seminar Day on "Freedom and dependence. Interdisciplinary Prospective"

Thursday, April 10 (3:00 pm, Aula Álvaro del Portillo),  under the initiative of the School of Philosophy and in collaboration with the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies and the University of Studies Roma Tre, the afternoon session of a Seminar Day will concern Freedom and dependence.  Interdisciplinary prospective.

Those organizing the event explain, "the objective of this seminar will be that of describing and defining various types of dependence, to identify its causes and try to frame a conceptual space that is capable of addressing the problem in a positive manner and consistent with human nature".

The theme of dependence, in relation to human freedom, in fact "is a phenomenon very complex which only in recent decades has manifested itself in all its fullness.  For complete deepening of such a complexity, the theme will be addressed from an interdisciplinary prospective that involves Philosophy, Neurobiology, Psychiatry, Psychology and Sociology".

The morning session will take place at l'ISTC-CNR (Via San Martino della Battaglia, 44).

Academic Ceremony in Honor of Prof. Michelangelo Tábet and presentation of the volume 'Collectanea Biblica'

Wednesday, April 9 (4:00 pm, Aula Álvaro del Portillo), under the initiative of the School of Theology, an academic ceremony in honor of Rev. Prof. Michelangelo Tábet took place. The occasion was also entailed a presentation of the volume Collectanea Biblica, edited by E. González, who collects most of his writings.

Study Conference on the Centennial of Msgr. Álvaro del Portillo

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of our first Grand Chancellor, Msgr. Alvaro del Portillo, and in view of his approaching beatification, from 12 to 14 march, 2014, took place a Study Conference on the theme "Vir fidelis multum laudabitur", examined three broad areas of his life and work.

Firstly, the conference will explore Msgr. del Portillo’s relationship with Opus Dei, both as son and collaborator of its Founder, Saint Josemaría, and as his successor.

Secondly, we will focus on his love for the Church, as can be seen through his noteworthy contributions to the Second Vatican Council and the new Code of Canon Law, as well as through his service to the particular Churches.

And lastly, we will consider the key elements of his spiritual message - echo of the teachings of St. Josemaría - and its particular application to such themes as the New Evangelization, the priesthood, the reflection on Faithful and Laity in the Church, etc..

The main talks had an academic character (historical, theological and canonical) and provided suggestions and ideas for further development.

There was also be two round-table discussions presenting living testimonies concerning the points discussed in the talks.

Student of Central African Republic received priestly ordinations

22 Saturday 2014, in the Basilica of Saint Apollinaris, the deacon Paterne H. Koyassambia- Kazondo, from the Diocese of Bangui (Central African Republic), received priestly ordinations from the hands of SER. Mons. Guerino Di Tora, Auxiliary Bishop of Rome.
Father Paterne studies Canon Law at the University and resides in the Priestly College Altomonte.

Academic community offers prayers and condolences for the soul of Fr. Stanley Masilompana

On March 14 Fr. Stanley Masilompana died, priest from the Archdiocese of Johannesburg (South Africa), alumnus of the School of canon law and former resident at the College for Priests Tiberino.
In September, he participated in a Training Course on matrimonial law and canonical procedural.
The academic community expresses condolences to family members and ensures their prayers for his soul.

The Prelate of Opus Dei, Mons. Echevarría: Pope Francis, “an authentic priest, who prays and knows how to listen”

Pope Francis is an “authentic priest who prays much and knows how to listen”, as defined the Prelate of Opus Dei, Mons. Javier Echevarría, opening a Convention celebrated at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in honor of the centenary of Mons. Álvaro del Portillo’s birth, first Grand Chancellor of the University

Marking the anniversary of the Pontificate, Mons. Javier Echevarría said that the example of Pope Francis is an “incentive to ensure that all Christians strive to bring the love and mercy of Jesus to the last corner of the world”. He then added that “it is also natural to cultivate the desire to thank Pope Francis for the apostolic dynamism that is spreading and for his genuine interest to stay close to every person”.

The prelate of Opus Dei continued that “many people have recognized in Pope Francis the authentic priest, who prays much and who knows how to listen to those he encounters.  All this is a source of great filial joy and of profound gratitude to God”.

Linking the anniversary of Pope Francis’ election with the figure of Mons. Álvaro del Portillo, first successor to San Josemaría the founder of Opus Dei, he recalled that a central aspect of his preaching was precisely fidelity to the Church and love for the Pope.  “Everywhere he went, Mons. Álvaro del Portillo always asked one to pray for the intentions of the Roman Pontiff.  He was always guided by the desire to bring ‘Rome to the outskirts’, and the ‘outskirts to the Pope’, as San Josemaría wrote".

 
Harambee Africa International offers an exhibition on Mons. Álvaro del Portillo

Wednesday March 12 (12:30 pm, Aula Álvaro del Portillo),  coinciding with the Congress on the Centenary of Mons. Álvaro del Portillo's birth, an exhibition was launched dedicated to aspects of his biography and some initatives of social character promoted thanks to his encouragement. The exhibition, the work of Harambee Africa, will provide the possibility to support four projects for 2014, including scholarships for African students at the University. It will be possible to visit the exhibition the days following the initially opening, located along the first floor corridors of Palazzo dell'Apollinare.

The meeting included, in addition to the morning interventions given by speakers with proven competence in their respective fields, the active participation of all members in the afternoon workshops.

As the organizers informed, “the works are intended to stimulate reflection on practical problems that are raised by the issues of the present day reality. The diversity of participants, from various cultural and ecclesial backgrounds, will surely be an occasion of mutual enrichment, through the sharing of personal experience”.
