From September 2 to 30, 2014, the Department of Languages organizes an intensive Italian course in collaboration with Società Dante Alighieri. The course is addressed only to Pontifical University of the Holy Cross students.

Publication of the Minutes from the “Mercy and Right in Matrimony” Day of Investigation

The Minutes of Mercy and Right in Matrimony, held by the School of Canon Law were recently published this past May 22nd, 2014.

The Volume, edited by rev. prof. Carlos José Errázuriz and Miguel Ángel Ortiz, is intended as a contribution to the reflection on the importance of mercy in matrimony when dealing with Canon Law, while taking into account existing pastoral challenges confronting the family, in line with the Synod of Bishops on “the family” scheduled for October.

90 Students from 27 countries participate in Classical language courses this summer

Ninety students from twenty-seven countries are participating in the 6th edition of summer courses for Classical Languages (Latin, Greek and Hebrew), promoted by Department of Languages in collaboration with the Polis Institute of Jerusalem.

Among the countries of origin are Japan, Korea, China, United States, Brazil, Finland and South Africa. Students from other Roman Pontifical Universities and young alumni from schools of the Eternal City (six students between the ages of 14-16 participate in courses) are new this year.

Registration this summer also included an increase in doctoral and master students coming from American and European Universities, such as 5 post-graduate students from the University of Oxford, accompanied during the second week by Prof.ssa Juliane Kerkhecker, teacher of Classical languages at the same University.

Publication of the first volume of conference proceedings on the Centennial of Bishop Álvaro del Portillo

The first volume of Conference Proceedings "Vir fidelis multum laudabitur" was published celebrating the one hundred years since the birth of Msgr. Álvaro del Portillo, the first University Chancellor.

The volume was edited by Rev. Prof. Pablo Gefaell and expounds on the relation of Opus Dei, the love of the Church and the spiritual message of the soon-to-be beatified bishop.

Cardinal Rainer Woelki is appointed Archbishop of Cologne (Germany)

Pope Francis appointed Cardinal Rainer Woelki as the Archbishop of Cologne on July 11th, 2014.
His Eminence obtained his PhD in Theology from the University of the Holy Cross in 2000 with a dissertation entitled, "Die Pfarrei. Ein Beitrag zu ihrer ekklesiologischen Ortsbestimmung".

Rev. Prof. Jean-Pierre Schouppe was awarded with "honourable mention" the René Cassin 2014

Monday July 7th, Rev. Professor of Canon Law Jean-Pierre Schouppe was awarded with "honourable mention" the René Cassin 2014 Award for his thesis in jurisprudence on the issue of the institutional dimension within religious freedom.
The ceremony was held in the European Council Hall in Strasbourg.

Rome Seminar Introduces Students to the Thought of Thomas Aquinas on Free Choice

Nineteen graduate students from leading universities around the world, from June 23-27, 2014 they attended a seminar St. Thomas Aquinas on Free Choice, led by Professor Stephen L. Brock, vice dean of the School of Philosophy.

The Seminar was held on the initiative on Lumen Christi Institute of Chicago and participants came from a wide variety of backgrounds-some studying Theology or Philosophy, others English or Political Science, one even pursuing medical training with a specialization in Clinical Pathology and Medical Ethics.

First volume published on the conference proceedings of “Saint Josemaría and Theological thought”

First volume on the Conference proceedings “San Josemaría and Theological thought” (Edusc, 492 pp.) was recently published, an event that took place at the University November 14-16, 2013.

Coordinated by Professor Javier López Díaz, the text contains plenary lectures of the conference, while the second volume will offer a selection of communications and will be published in the coming months.

The volume is characterized by its scientific richness, though largely being easy to read.  It opens with an article of mons. Javier Echevarría, Prelate of Opus Dei, on Saint Josemaría’s contributions to the II Vatican Council, which is followed by the study of mons. Fernando Ocáriz, on the wave that Saint Josemaría’s teachings can confer to theology, a study that sets the framework of the entire volume.

This work adds to the fundamental theological bibliography on St. Josemaría, but will also appeal to those who are interested in renewing theology using the light and warmth of the teachings of the saints.
