The academic community of the Holy Cross extends its highest congratulations to the 22 new cardinals created in the Consistory on February 18. It also joins in prayer with the Holy Father and the whole Church for all the newly elect, among whom is H.E. Rainer Woelki, a Doctor in Theology from our University.

The "goodness" of tomorrow's priests will heavily depend on the "quality" of today's educators. Yet, the seminary remains an appropriate and indispensable place to receive a priestly formation that adequately takes into account today's challenges, especially that of a culturally globalized world.

These are some of the conclusions arrived at by the second Week Long Seminar for Seminary Formers, organized from February 6-10 by the Center for Priestly Formation of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross regarding the theme "The Ministry of Direction in Seminaries."

On February 10, by invitation of the Congregation for Catholic Education, the University hosted a group of experts from The European Higher Education Area in a Global Context. The meeting concerned initiatives of the "Bologna Process," as well as the mutual recognition of studies offered by European academic institutions.

The opening address was given by the Vice-Rector of Communications, Prof. Norberto González Gaitano.

Rome, FEB 2, 2012--On Thursday February 2, Professor Alfonso Nieto passed away at the University Hospital of Navarre (Spain). An advocate for the birth of journalistic studies at the university level in Europe, Prof. Nieto was also a promoter of the first--and to this date, only--school of institutional communications in the Catholic Church.

With joy and gratitude to God, the Holy Cross University community welcomes the news that the four priests arrested last week in the Diocese of Siayuan, Inner Mongolia (China) have been freed. Among them was a former student of the School of Canon Law, Joseph WangHu.

A few days ago the Rev. Prof. Martin Rhonheimer (School of Philosophy) was received by the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, to whom he presented a copy of his latest book Christentum und säkularer Staat (Herder).

January 27 through 29 the University hosted the Roman Seminar: Leadership des Saints, Sainteté des Leaders, organized in collaboration with the Thomas More Leadership Institute.

On Wednesday, January 18, took place a School of Theology's Feast Day.

On January 13, 2012, a delegation of Rectors from Rome's Pontifical Universities was received in the Presidential Palace by Giorgio Napolitano, President of the Italian Republic. The meeting was held in honor of the 150th anniversary of Italian Unity.
