Due to the upcoming Synod of Bishops on the Family this day aimed to stimulate reflection on the importance of mercy in canon law concerning marriage, taking into account current pastoral challenges regarding the family.

After a theological report, followed by a canonical one, on the question of the relationship between mercy and justice, four aspects of Church practices on this matter was examined:  the admission to marry, accompaniment of families, especially those in crisis, processes to nullify a marriage, and pastoral care for faithful who are civilly divorced and remarried.
