Two Prominent Guests Speak on the Positive Influence of Adam Smith's Liberal Doctrine
On January 11, 2012, by the initiative of the MCE Project, two distinguished speakers introduced University alumni and students to the life and theories of Adam Smith.
Dr. Karen Horn, Director of the German Institute for Economic Research, explained the positive influence of Smith's liberal doctrine, which arrived even to the poor. She explained how free competition and the abolition of privileges and monopolies lowers prices for everyone. Professor Reyes Calderón, Dean of the University of Navarre's School of Economy, as well as a fiction author and mother of nine children, took a different approach. She criticized the underlying anthropology of Smith's system, which substitutes the person with the individual.
Towards the end of the day, the seminar organizers commented: "The Gospel is neither a political program nor an economic theory. How then, can a School of Theology dedicate a day long seminar to Adam Smith, the "father" of political economy? It is because the faith also has a social dimension that manifests itself in economic conduct. It is the search for truth and goodness."
