Department of Languages - Latin summer courses - Groups and Programs - Group II (= level I B)

This program is provisional and subject to change in accord with the specific needs of the students.

Course overview


Prerequisites:
The student can access this level either if he/she has completed Latin I in one of the former courses organized by the Polis Institute or if he/she has succesfully passed the placement test during the first day of the Summer course.

Level II is addressed to students with an elementary knowledge of Latin grammar and a background of at least 500-1000 words appertaining to the ordinary vocabulary.
Level II is specially addressed to students with only a passive acquaintance of grammatical issues, and/or have approached the original Latin texts only for translations goals. The aim of the course is to acquire greater active expertise of the Latin language both at the oral and written level.

Course topics:
1) Knowledge of around 1000-1500 words of ordinary vocabulary
2) Active expertise of all declinations:
    - study of all declinations case by case, including all 5 substantive declinations, the 2 adjectival declinations and pronouns
3) Active expertise of verbal categories of time and mode:
    - present imperative
    - present indicative, imperfect, perfect, future
    - present subjuntive
    - passive forms
     - participials
4) Active expertise of syntactical issues:
    - subordination
    - particiapial proposition
    - infinitive proposition

Reading without a dictionary simple texts.

B: Above the average standard: 86 - 95%
C: Average standard: 76 - 85%

E: Minimum criteria to pass: 60 - 65%
E: Fail: 0 - 59%
