Department of Languages - Greek summer courses
Ancient Greek intensive course
with the Polis Institute method
Learn to speak ancient Greek (koiné) as a living language!
Would you like to read in the original the New Testament, the Parallel Lives of Plutarch, or the Histories of Polybius, as you would read an English text? By hearing and speaking ancient Greek, you can learn the language which molded western culture, as naturally as you would learn a modern language: in a living way. With the Polis method, you can do it.
This course draws most of its inspiration from techniques usually applied nowadays for teaching modern languages. This method offers a series of Greek texts ordered according to a natural progression. From the first class, the course is taught in Greek and the students may dialog and interact in Greek with the teacher. The vocabulary applied during the course is drawn from different databases: Apollonius Dyscolus’ (grammatical vocabulary), Plutarch’s (usual daily words) and New Testament concordances (common vocabulary). In addition, the vocabulary of the Septuagint is applied whenever necessary.
